you are so smart
You are so smart is a film that works with the interpretation of the adjective – articulate – used as a word that has a different meaning depending on skin tone, cultural experiences and expectations. In this film, three women, repeat the words, you are so smart. The meaning of the phrase becomes more complex as they repeat these four words in a metrical repetitional pattern. The work is edited using skin colour, dialect, facial expressions, and body language as signifiers for class and education.
vagabonds of the caribbean
This non-linear narrative film explores the complexities of mortality by using fragmentations of memory and place. Performances by two satirical fictional surrogates Queen Nappy and YoYo Yolanda, are collaged with found imagery using digital video painting merged with persona transformation and body modification within a historical context, popular culture, and contemporary events. The sound is a fusion of the artist’s piano playing; remix of found and appropriated sounds from historical and popular sources.
the paper bag test
The paper bag test is a multi-media installation where interviewees’ narrate their stories on colourism. In the interviews, I ask questions that allow them to reflect on their experiences with colourism and how it has changed their life. I combine popular culture imagery, the interviewee’s footage, speech dialect, body language and persona transformation to create an appropriated documentary-style film on colourism.
